St Louis Wedding Photographers | Angel Oak Johns Island SC

Angel Oak

Johns Island, South Carolina

Enroute to an engagement session in Hilton Head SC, we took a strongly suggested detour to see the Angel Oak. An unpaved road in South Carolina led to an absolutely phenomenal sight.

Spanish moss adorned its interwoven boughs lending a sense of antiquity and dignity to this surreal life form. We were in awe of the sheer size and complexity. Each sweeping branch seemed to lead to a peaceful secluded spot all under the solemn protection of the over 17,000 square feet of shade furnished by this solitary giant. Sitting beneath this oak was a wonderful place to contemplate our relative smallness on this Earth.

Crêpes on a Snowy Day

When a blizzard strikes in March, what do you do?! Brunch!

When I was growing up my family ate crêpes almost every week. My Grandmother and Great Grandparents are from The Netherlands, so some of our family traditions have distinctly European origins. Whenever we can steal away time to get together as a family these crêpes are one of our most anticipated treats!

crepe recipie

My mixing bowls are from my Great Grandmother. She handed this recipe down and I imagine the bowls remember how she used to make these crêpes which may account for why they turn out so well.

The Recipe:

-Relaxing music (French perhaps?)

-2 eggs

-3/4 cup of milk

-1/2 cup of water

-1 cup of flour

-1/8 tsp of salt

-1/8 tsp of sugar

-1 tsp of vanilla

-1 tsp of melted butter

1. Whisk the eggs, milk, water and vanilla in a mixing bowl.

2. Mix the flour, salt and sugar in a separate mixing bowl.

3. Gradually add the flour-salt-sugar mixture to the “step one” liquid and beat with whisk until smooth.

4. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes to let the bubbles escape.

5. Add melted butter to a frying pan to create a non-stick surface. Using a 1/3 cup measuring cup, add batter to pan and rotate pan in circular motion to evenly distribute batter (It’s all in the wrist). Cook for a few minutes on each side until the crêpe reaches a golden color. Repeat.

Serve with fresh berries, honey, syrup, powdered sugar etc. This time we enjoyed filling the crêpes with lemon curd and raspberries for a tart variety.

Enjoy!

Belleville, IL Photographer | A Baby Bird

My baby robin. I think I’ll name him, Grumpy.

A baby robin has been around our house for the past week or so. We got home from an out-of-town trip on a cool beautiful evening, brought in our luggage and then I grabbed the watering can to give a drink to the flowers and vegetable garden. When I came around to our back yard, a little bird sat on one of our patio chairs just cocking his head at me curiously. “I’ll grab my camera! Although… I’m sure he will be gone when I get back…” To my surprise, he was still there! So I slowly edged closer to him,  snapping pics, until I was only a few inches away!

A week later, the little guy is still around! Watches me as I water the flowers, hops around our patio and backyard. He is strangely friendly, even though his spray of gray feathers gives him the look of an unkempt grumpy old man. Such a small thing that makes me smile 🙂

Celebrating 5 Years Together

After five years together, I find it fascinating how my husband and I have become more alike or perhaps, have found more ways we are alike. Our sense of humor, our taste in food, and even how we can observe situations and know what the other is thinking, sometimes with less than a glance. Yet, there are times when we are completely opposite, i.e. how we fold towels. I think the difference  in our personalities keeps life interesting. So, it has been just that, an interesting five years.

It seems like we should be celebrating our one year anniversary. Life just seems to fly by that way. I’m glad that we took this evening with some family to stop and smell the roses. We met at Eleven Eleven Mississippi, on a perfect evening with mild St. Louis weather as a backdrop. Good people and good food made for some good memories. We talked of past family vacations and moments therein that seemed to have gone horribly wrong, yet now are humorous. Having family that you love is a blessing.

A fancy drink pose is a must!

Crab cakes… amazing!

And this would be an amazing steak! Rubbed with gorgonzola butter. Yes, gorgonzola butter. No words.

I love this picture of my mother in law with a delicious pizza. All of the food was so amazing!

Thank you for taking us out for a wonderful dinner!

xoxo Amanda

Five Years

The day of our wedding was a chilly, dreary day. All of the recent flower blooms had been wiped away by a late season ice storm. The day itself began with a bit of a rough start and further disappointing weather. Then, I arrived at the ceremony; where you were waiting to marry me.

Everyone left the room and we saw each other for the first time. Butterflies. You hugged me. Everything was right. By the end of the day the sun had broken through the gray dour clouds for a perfect sunset as we left. Together.

Five years have flown by. I am so glad to have you by my side every day.

xoxo amanda

Belleville IL Photographer | Lovely ♥ Spring

Wonderful Spring. The first sprigs of greenery after a long cold winter, the first smell of barbecue in the neighborhood, and fresh flowers straight from the yard. Even though we had a relatively mild winter this past year, I’m still giddy for spring. The vibrantly alive color combinations a counterpoint to mild spring breezes…invigorating.

My new 50mm lens arrived in the mail last week, just in time to take advantage of a warm spring afternoon. I went around my yard and took a few pictures of my favorite flowers. Then my husband and I went for a walk in a park.  We strolled leisurely discussing where to take portraits for the wedding we will be shooting this weekend. How can you not enjoy this gorgeous weather?

Ducks… so cute, so graceful.

St. Louis MO Photographers | The Fabulous Fox Theatre

A NIGHT AT THE FABULOUS FOX THEATRE

I am a little sister, which has its pros. I always appreciated not having to ride the bus to school by myself, having someone nearby in case something went wrong and you know, watching how happy my brother was when I let him win at a video game. And now, having a sister-in-law…. even better! The husbands can go off and talk about manly things while us girls talk about our addiction to pinterest! Jadah is a healthy food blogger here. So, we also bond over our nerdy HTML talk.

Another perk: sister-in-law receives tickets from boss for box seats at the Fox Theatre! Like I said, sister-in-laws are great! Meet my brother Buddy and his wife Jadah:

Um, yes, we are fancy with our fancy drinks!

It was a great night out!

xoxo Amanda
